Module 5

The module I chose to evaluate is a different topic from my previous module. It is an algebra module for a public school. The link is listed below:

I only critiqued the first section, Expressions and Formulas.

This module is well on its way on becoming a problem centered module. For each component skill, there was evidence of tell and show for the condition and step, except for component skill 3, which I thought lacked the show of the condition. The author did a good job of providing information about each component skill and demonstrating the skill, but there was really no evidence of guidance. Guidance could have been provided in the practice worksheets provided. The practice worksheets only had questions but no solutions provided. If solutions were provided, guidance could have been included. Also in the solution, coaching could have been provided in the explanations.

For multimedia, I gave this module a plus mainly because there was a link to a video that provided step by step instructions on solving a problem and provided audio. Other than that, there was no other multimedia present. Animations visually showing the formulas could be one way of incorporating multimedia and also being beneficial to visual learners. The animation could show a real life situation where this topic would apply and go through the steps of resolving the situation.

I gave negative marks on the identification of the conditions and steps. For math problems, I’m not too sure how students would identify the condition and steps.

The positive aspects of this module included the use of mnemonics in teaching the order of operations, something that is very widely seen in teaching math. The author also provides immediate feedback in the warm-up and assessment quizzes by providing the correct answer once the students is completed with the quiz and feedback if answered incorrectly.
